The maritime industry continues to take major steps toward decarbonization, with the launch of the world’s first methanol-powered subsea and offshore wind installation vesselWindkeeper—marking a significant technological milestone.

This ship is a Service Operation Vessel (SOV) designed with a focus on environmental sustainability, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and promoting fuel transition in the shipping industry. The Windkeeper can operate on methanol, a cleaner-burning alternative fuel, and is built to support offshore wind energy infrastructure—a growing sector in the transition to renewable energy.

Key Features:

  • Innovative design for minimal wave resistance and optimized fuel use

  • High maneuverability and operational efficiency

  • Reduced CO₂ emissions and compliance with future green shipping regulations

The vessel was developed by the Norwegian company Vard (a subsidiary of Fincantieri) in collaboration with Norwind Offshore, showcasing Northern Europe’s leading role in clean energy and maritime innovation.

This launch is expected to set a new standard for green maritime support vessels and demonstrates that the use of alternative fuels like methanol is becoming increasingly viable for large-scale marine operations.
